Eyeliner Tattoo Procedure

Eyeliner tattooing, also known as permanent eyeliner or lash enhancement tattoo, is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that enhances the eyes by implanting pigment along the lash line. This technique defines the eyes, creates the illusion of fuller lashes, and eliminates the need for daily eyeliner application. The procedure can be customized to achieve various styles, from a subtle lash enhancement to a bold winged eyeliner look.

Procedure Steps

1. Consultation & Customization
  • The process begins with a consultation to determine the client’s desired eyeliner style, thickness, and color.

  • Options include a natural lash enhancement, classic eyeliner, or a winged effect.

  • The technician maps out the eyeliner shape to ensure symmetry and alignment with the client’s eye shape.

2. Numbing & Preparation
  • A topical numbing cream is applied to the eyelids to minimize discomfort.

  • The eye area is cleansed and prepped for the procedure.

3. Eyeliner Tattoo Application
  • Using a digital tattoo machine with an ultra-fine needle, pigment is carefully implanted along the lash line.

  • The technician works in small, precise strokes to ensure an even and defined application.

  • The procedure typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the desired style.

4. Healing & Aftercare
  • Initial healing occurs within 5-7 days, with full results visible after 4-6 weeks.

  • The eyeliner may appear darker and slightly swollen immediately after the procedure but will soften as it heals.

  • Aftercare includes avoiding eye makeup, excessive moisture, and rubbing the eyes to ensure proper pigment retention.

Pre-Care - Eyeliner Tattoo

  • Do not wear mascara on the day of the procedure.

  • Have your eyes free of makeup and moisturizer.

  • Do bring sunglasses to wear home. Eyes may be light sensitive.

  • If you wear eyeglasses, please bring those to your appointment

  • If you wear contact lenses, you must remove them before the procedure.

  • It is not a bad idea to have a ride home after an eyeliner procedure if you are sensitive to light. Have sunglasses available. Eyes may be dilated afterward.

  • Avoid lash tinting 2 weeks before. Do not dye or perm lashes for 10 days prior.

  • If you have had Lasik or Cataract Surgery you must get medical clearance from your physician.

  • Eyelash extensions must be removed 1 week prior to your eyeliner procedure.

  • If you are using Latisse or any other eyelash serums you will need to discontinue use 4 weeks prior to the procedure.

  • No botox injections 2 weeks prior to procedure in eye area only.

  • The skin must be free of all irritations including blemishes, eczema, and psoriasis.

  • Must not be on Accutane medication for one year prior to getting a Permanent Cosmetic Tattoo.

  • Stop taking Fish Oil, Vitamin C, Glucosamine, Evening Primrose Oil, Ginger, Ginko one week prior to your appointment as they thin the blood and prevent the pigment from implanting correctly. If you continue to use these the healed result may be patchy.

  • Discontinue the use of any anti-aging, skin brightening or anti-acne skincare products. Particularly those that contain Alpha Hydroxy (AHA), Vitamin A, Retinol. Ideally, do not use these products for 30 days prior to your appointment, and yes, even if you do not use it near the area to be treated it does spread under your skin and your cosmetic tattoo will heal patchy. Once your tattoo has healed under the skin surface (approximately 6 weeks following your final session) you may resume your usual skin care routine.

  • Do not schedule any facials, microdermabrasion, microneedling, peels or laser treatments for at least 4 weeks prior to your appointment.

  • Please avoid any type of blood thinning medication for a minimum of 72 hours prior to your procedure unless is unsafe to do so for your health. Please ask your doctor before stopping these types of medications. Such as: Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Advil, Niacin, Voltaren, Indocid. As well as Prenatal Vitamins, Vitamin E or Nutritional Shakes. Tylenol is recommended if you have a low pain tolerance.

  • Do not work out on the day of the procedure.

  • Avoid sun tanning or tanning beds for 2 weeks prior to procedure. If you show up to your appointment with a sunburn you will need to reschedule and will forfeit your deposit. As your skin exfoliates from a sunburn it will take the pigment.

  • Scars from surgery or injury must be healed for at least one year prior to service.

  • Do not drink alcohol 24 hours prior to your procedure

  • Do not consume coffee or other caffeine products 24 hours prior.

  • Please note that you will be more sensitive during your menstrual cycle.

After Care - Permanent Eyeliner

  • Using a fresh Q-Tip, apply a light coat of vaseline to the tattooed area twice a day. Keeping the area moist during the first 5-7 days will help the tattooed area hold color and heal evenly. It is normal for the pigment to fade 30-50% within the first two weeks.

  • Do not touch the tattooed area with your fingers. This increases your risk of infection.

  • Do not rub or scratch your eyes. This increases your risk of a corneal abrasion.

  • If you should experience swelling, an ice pack may be applied using a thin protective barrier such as a paper towel. Icing is most effective in the first 24 hours following the procedure. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can also reduce any residual swelling.

  • Do not apply makeup or mascara on or near the tattooed area for 7 days. Purchase new makeup or mascara to avoid contamination or bacterial infection.

  • Do not scrub or pick at the tattooed area. Doing so can cause the pigment underneath to be pulled out. Allow the epithelial skin to flake off by itself.

  • Do not use makeup remover or creams and avoid pools and hot tubs for two weeks.

  • With freshly washed hands, you may gently cleanse the eye area with tepid water. Avoid cleansers, soap and washcloths.

  • Do not wear contact lenses for 72 hours following the procedure. If possible, use a new pair.

  • Sunglasses are recommended to protect the eyes when outside.

  • Please advice immediately should you experience any of the following symptoms: redness in or around the eye, matting or drainage, pain that becomes increasingly worse, difficulty keeping your eyes open, sensitivity to light.

  • Remember to schedule a touch up appointment within 1-3 months to avoid paying an additional touch-up fee.
